Wildcats

Fifty-two years is a long time to wait, and that is what the 2020 and 2021 titles meant at Davidson College Stadium. The players who closed it did so on a ground that holds only around five to six thousand people.

Davidson's football side has always run alongside the rest of the college's athletics out of the town of Davidson, North Carolina, competing now in the FCS ranks of the Pioneer League.

The rivalry with Presbyterian College carries its own name, the Carolina Border Clash, fought over the 1919 Cup, a fixture that has given the Wildcats an opponent measured in something other than league standings. Stetson has also stood as a regular test on the schedule, while more recent seasons have brought games against VMI, Elon, Dickinson and Concord into the rotation.

None of that changes what the program's story runs back to: intercollegiate football at Davidson dates to 1898, two years after the sport had taken hold on campus in 1896, the point the Wildcats have always measured themselves from.
