Belgrade Arena

The Belgrade Arena stands as a monument to interrupted time. Construction began in 1991, but the work was halted by sanctions and economic collapse. The first event to cross its threshold was not a match, but a political rally in 2000, held while the roof was still incomplete. It was not until the final licensing was secured in 2006 that the building opened for events.

The arena features a distinctive architectural style. The most striking feature is the central playing surface, a wooden parquet floor that sits low within the bowl of blue seats. For international basketball, this floor is often surrounded by temporary barriers to create a closed court, isolating the action from the stands.

The arena has seen its share of sporting drama. The attendance record was set during a Eurocup basketball quarter-final second leg match between Crvena zvezda and Budivelnyk Kyiv, a game that went to overtime and drew a crowd of 24,232. But the building is perhaps better known for its role in global culture, having hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008, when the floor capacity was expanded to accommodate over 20,000 people. Its identity has shifted with the market; once the Kombank Arena, then the Štark Arena, the venue recently shed its sponsors and returned to its original title, Belgrade Arena.
