Aleksandar Nikolić did not simply coach the club; he helped invent it. On 4 March 1945 he stood among the founders who registered a basketball section inside the Sports Society Crvena zvezda, alongside Borislav Stanković, Nebojša Popović and Radomir Šaper.

Europe answered more slowly, and only once in full: in 1974 Crvena zvezda beat Spartak ZJŠ Brno 86–75 to win the FIBA European Cup Winners' Cup, the Saporta Cup, having already lost two finals either side of it, to Simmenthal Milano in 1972 and to Spartak Leningrad in 1975. The EuroLeague has never been added to that shelf.

Domestic basketball in Serbia has mostly gone the other way for the club. Since 2015 it has taken the Serbian SuperLiga nine times and the regional ABA League seven times, and one that made the arena on Belgrade's edge, capacity 18,386, a difficult place for the rest of the league to visit.

None of it carries the weight of a single fixture. Twice a season Partizan arrives, or Crvena zvezda travels the short distance across the city, for what everyone here calls the Eternal derby.

It began, in the end, as four men's idea for a section within a wider sports society, drawn up in the last spring of the war, long before any of the silverware existed to justify it.
