Chambery

Chambéry's ice hockey began as a department of a multi-sport society. Dominique Flatry set up the ice hockey section of Stade Olympique de Chambéry in 1972, and the club later took the name Chambéry Hockey 73. For almost two decades it had no nickname. In 1991 it became the Éléphants, after the Elephant Fountain.

The climb was slow. The club won the French Division 3 title in 1995 and the Division 2 title in 2018, and the second of those brought promotion to Division 1. In August 2020, with the finances in crisis, its place in that division was in doubt until it was validated for the season.

The 2023–2024 season was notable at that level. In the Coupe de France it knocked out two Ligue Magnus sides, the Rapaces de Gap and the Boxers de Bordeaux, and went as far as the semi-finals. In the league it reached the Division 1 final and lost to the Corsaires de Nantes.

The squad is built largely from loans out of the academy of the Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble, the team Chambéry treats as its main rival. Matches between the two are billed as the Derby des Alpes. The rink, the Patinoire de Chambéry Métropole, holds 1,200.
