Clermont-Ferrand

The nickname Les Sangliers Arvernes, the Arverne Boars, was adopted in 1989, as that season ended. The club has carried it ever since, through a change of name and a change of legal entity.

The hockey section began in 1972 inside the Club des Sports Clermontois. In 1992 it became the Clermont-Auvergne Hockey Club, and under that name it won the French top-flight championship in 1999. It reached the semi-finals of the Coupe de France in 2001 and finished as runner-up in the Poule Nationale, the second-tier equivalent, in 2003. An earlier Coupe de France, won in 1982, came in an edition reserved for third-division clubs.

The same year a new body, Hockey Clermont Communauté Auvergne , took over its franchise and its place in the French league system. The colours stayed blue, white and orange, and home games stayed at the 2,000-seat Patinoire Clermont Auvergne Métropole.

The years since have moved between divisions. The club won the Division 2 championship in 2019 and went up to Division 1. It came down again after the 2022-23 season, then kept its place in the second tier when Mulhouse were liquidated and a spot opened. Regional media call it a derby, though it has no name of its own. Annecy and Courchevel are the other opponents the club measures itself against.
