Match Report: Volga Ulyanovsk 0–1 Leningradets
Leningradets took all three points from Ulyanovsk with a 1-0 victory in the seventh round of the First League. The result ended a two-match losing streak for the visitors, who had dropped points in four of their previous five fixtures. By then, the away side had already shown they could grind out results when needed.
Volga started brighter and kept the ball, but Leningradets stayed compact and looked dangerous on the break. The hosts earned five corners to the visitors' two, but possession alone did not trouble the Leningradets back line. And here's the thing — Volga created more chances but could not find the finish.
The first yellow card went to Andrey Kostin in the eighth minute, a sign of the physical contest from the outset. Leningradets made three changes at the interval, bringing on Matvey Pershin, Alexandrovich Dmitry Yakovlev, and Astemir Khashkulov alongside Igor Gershun. The visitors then struck in the 63rd minute when Dmitriy Nikitin finished a counter-attack to give them the lead.
Volga pushed for an equaliser but Leningradets defended deep and held firm. Kirill Isaev picked up a yellow in the 67th minute as the game opened up. Both sides made further substitutions, with Dmitriy Nikitin and Andrey Kostin coming off in the 71st and 73rd minutes respectively. A late yellow in stoppage time did nothing to change the outcome.
Volga dominated possession at 55 per cent and registered 13 shots, four on target, but Leningradets made them pay for their wastefulness. The visitors managed only four shots with two on target, yet converted one into a decisive goal. To be fair, Leningradets were clinical when they got their chance, and that is often enough in these tighter matches.
The win lifts Leningradets to 13 points in 12th place, while Volga remain on 11 points in 15th. The hosts have not won since their midweek victory and are running out of games to turn things around. Our forecast had tipped a home win at 51 per cent, but the match went the other way — Leningradets refused to go away and took the points when it mattered.
