About the player
Damian van Bruggen returned to Almere City in 2022 and he was handed the captain's armband. He led the side to that promotion in the 2022–23 season, making 68 league appearances and scoring once along the way.
Utrecht-born, van Bruggen came through the Ajax academy, playing for Jong Ajax between 2014 and 2016 before two seasons with Jong PSV. His path to first-team football ran through VVV-Venlo, where a loan spell turned permanent in 2018 and he went on to make 48 league appearances. From there he took his career abroad, joining NK Inter Zaprešić in Croatia in January 2020, then Slaven Belupo later that year, where he made 65 league appearances. A brief stint at NK Olimpija Ljubljana in Slovenia followed in early 2022, before Almere City brought him back to the Netherlands.
After the promotion campaign, van Bruggen left Almere City in 2024 for Vejle Boldklub in the Danish Superliga, signing on a free transfer and taking the number 14 shirt on a deal running to 2026.
A right-footed defender, van Bruggen never broke through to the Dutch senior side, though he represented the Netherlands at every youth level from under-16 to under-21, earning 33 caps and scoring four goals across those age groups.
