About the player
Fariña's route to Nizhny Novgorod ran through two loan spells and a stop in Khimki before he arrived in Russia's top flight. Released from his loan at Municipal in Guatemala, the Panamanian centre-back joined FC Khimki as a free agent in July 2024, and a year later moved on again — this time to FC Nizhny Novgorod on a three-year deal, once more without a transfer fee changing hands. Head coach Vadim Garanin welcomed him by calling him a "leader" and a "system-forming player", adding that his level suited the Russian Premier League.
Before any of that, Fariña came up through Río Abajo F.C. and C.D. Plaza Amador before making his senior debut with S.D. Atlético Nacional in 2020. He was signed by Independiente de La Chorrera in 2021: first a loan to Universitario back home in Panama, then a second loan to Municipal in Guatemala, before Khimki came calling.
At international level, Fariña made his debut for Panama in March 2023 against Guatemala, with appearances at the 2024 Copa América and through the CONCACAF Nations League campaign that took Panama to the final.
Edgardo Fariña now wears the number 24 shirt in Nizhny Novgorod, the latest stop in a career built on loan spells that have taken him from Central America to Russia.
