Federico Santiago Valverde Dipetta

Federico Valverde grew up in the Unión neighbourhood of Montevideo and started out at Estudiantes de la Unión before joining Peñarol's academy at the age of ten. He made his professional debut for the club in August 2015 and, still a teenager, won the Uruguayan Primera División title that season. Real Madrid had already agreed a deal to sign him a month into that campaign, but FIFA rules on transfers of minors meant he stayed in Montevideo until he turned eighteen in July 2016, when the move was finally completed.

Valverde joined Real Madrid Castilla and then spent the 2017–18 season on loan at Deportivo La Coruña, making 24 appearances in La Liga. He returned to the Spanish capital and made his first-team debut for Real Madrid in October 2018. Since then he has become a fixture in the midfield.

His individual honours trace a steady rise: the Silver Ball at the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, another Silver Ball at the 2022 Club World Cup, and Real Madrid's Goal of the Season for 2023–24 after his volley against Manchester City. With Uruguay he has earned 76 caps and scored nine goals, helped the side to bronze at the 2024 Copa América, and was named UEFA Nations League Finals top scorer in 2025. He was also named Player of the Match in Uruguay's opening game of the 2026 World Cup against Saudi Arabia.
