About the player
Joël Mall did not take the direct route to a first-choice jersey.
After a spell in Germany with SV Darmstadt 98 cut short by injury, Mall rebuilt himself in Cyprus, moving between Pafos, Apollon Limassol, AEK Larnaca and Olympiakos Nicosia, racking up 64 league appearances in his two seasons at the latter alone. In 2023 he gained Cypriot citizenship and made his senior international debut for Cyprus that June against Georgia, going on to earn around 20 caps, an unusual second act for a goalkeeper who had already worn Switzerland's colours at Under-20 level.
His return home to Servette FC produced the moment he is now known for. In the 2023–24 Swiss Cup final against FC Lugano, Mall saved three penalties in the shootout to hand Servette the trophy. In May 2026 he moved on again, joining BSC Young Boys as a free agent, this time as second-choice goalkeeper.
