About the player
Torreira's move to Turkey in August 2022 came at a fee of €6 million from Arsenal.
Torreira's path to that success began far from Istanbul, in Fray Bentos, where he came through the youth ranks of I.A. 18 de Julio and Montevideo Wanderers before crossing to Italy to join Pescara. He made his senior debut there in a Serie B match against Varese, and within weeks had signed for Sampdoria, who immediately loaned him back to Pescara for a further season. His performances at Sampdoria persuaded Arsenal to pay around £26 million for him in 2018.
At international level, Torreira made his Uruguay debut in a China Cup semi-final win over the Czech Republic, going on to earn 40 caps for his country. At Arsenal , he was part of the squad that won the FA Cup, though injury kept him out of the final itself.
