About the player
The season that Vito Mannone spent on loan at Minnesota United in 2019 earned him the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award and a place in the league's Best XI. He was then a Reading player, sent across the Atlantic.
He had arrived in English football as a teenager. Arsenal took him from the Atalanta academy in 2005 for £350,000 and gave him his first professional contract the same year. The Emirates Cup was won three times while he was at the club, in 2007, 2009 and 2010, and he was loaned out to Barnsley and twice to Hull City to get matches. He left in 2013.
Sunderland were his next club, and the move there was reported at about £2 million. Within a season he was named the club's Player of the Year, and in 2014 Sunderland reached the EFL Cup final. In 2017 he moved to Reading, again for a reported £2 million, and a loan to Esbjerg fB followed in 2020.
That September he joined Monaco as a free agent and reached the Coupe de France final in 2021. Lorient signed him, again as a free agent, in September 2022. In 2023 he moved to Lille, where he kept the number 1 shirt and stayed until 2025.
Mannone has not been capped by the senior Italian national team. In June 2026 he joined Crawley Town as a player-coach.
