Wessel Speel

Wessel Speel is a Dutch goalkeeper. He started out at Olympia and Jodan Boys before joining FC Utrecht's academy, progressing through the club's youth ranks and Jong FC Utrecht, but he never earned caps for any Netherlands youth side. In 2020 he moved to the United States.

At Hofstra University he built a substantial run of appearances and was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week. He then transferred to Duke University for the 2024 season, where he was named ACC Goalkeeper of the Year, made First-Team All-American, and was a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy. That season he led the ACC in goals-against average and shared the conference lead in shutouts.

Speel also gained experience outside the college game, playing in USL League Two for Long Island Rough Riders and turning out for Salem City FC. He signed with Minnesota United FC in early 2025 and made his MLS debut that June. Soon after, he was loaned to Shelbourne in Ireland, where he made a strong run of appearances in the League of Ireland Premier Division and in European qualifiers. A second loan spell at Shelbourne followed before he returned to Minnesota United, who extended his contract and loaned him on again, this time to Almere City in the Dutch Eerste Divisie, where he has continued to add clean sheets to his record. He has not yet been capped by the Netherlands senior national team.
