Albion Rovers

Two Coatbridge sides, Albion and Rovers, put their names together in 1882, and the club that came out of it has stayed there since. Jock Stein wore the shirt in the 1940s.

The Wee Rovers reached a Scottish Cup final in 1919-20 and lost it to Kilmarnock. The league titles that followed came further down the divisions: the old B Division in 1933-34, Division Two in 1988-89, League Two in 2014-15. Ciaran Donnelly, who scored against Rangers in the same season's Scottish Cup and is remembered for it in a way few Albion Rovers players are remembered for anything.

Cliftonhill holds 1,572, smaller than most grounds in the senior game, and the colours have been red and yellow since the switch from the club's original blue and white. Across Coatbridge the fixture that matters is against Airdrieonians, the Monklands derby, the one match in the calendar that does not need explaining to anyone local.

None of that changed what happened in 2023, when a play-off defeat to Spartans sent Albion Rovers out of the SPFL for the first time in the club's history. They are playing outside the senior leagues now, working out how to get back into them.
