Dalbeattie Star went back into the South of Scotland League for the 2023–24 season, after a decade away, and won it straight off, their twelfth title in the competition. Ten years in the Lowland League, from 2013 to 2023, had put them up against clubs from well beyond Dumfries and Galloway; coming back down brought a first league win in years and a reminder of where the club has done most of its winning.
The Star folded in 1948 and stayed gone until 1976, when a group of enthusiasts in the town put the club back together. Islecroft Stadium, where they've played since 1950, holds 1,320, a hundred of them seated.
Regional competitions have been the club's business for most of a century: the Southern Counties Cup twelve times, the Potts Cup nine, the South of Scotland League Cup five. John Shankly turned out for Dalbeattie Star between 1934 and 1936 — brother of Bill Shankly, who went on to manage Liverpool.
The Stewartry Derby, against Threave Rovers, is the fixture that matters most locally.
