Amazulu

A group of players in Durban formed the club in 1932 as Zulu Royal Conquerors; before the year was out, King Solomon had asked for something shorter, and it became Zulu Royals. The name held up better than the committee did — internal disputes split the club apart in 1970, and the members who stayed on rebuilt it as Zulu Royals United, then AmaZulu in 1974. Ownership kept testing that settlement anyway: a new owner reverted it to Zulu Royal in 2002, before Dr Patrick Sokhela, taking control in 2005, put AmaZulu back for good. Colours moved with the name too, from royal blue and white as Zulu Royals to dark green and white, before settling into the black-and-white stripes the club wears now.

It was still Zulu Royals when the club won the National Professional Soccer League in 1972. Two decades later, playing as AmaZulu, it beat Kaizer Chiefs 3-1 in the 1992 Coca-Cola Cup final.

Usuthu have rented Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban since 2009, a ground that holds 55,500 for league fixtures. The derby against Golden Arrows — the Zulu derby, or the Natal derby — is Durban's own; matches against Durban City carry the same edge when the province's bragging rights are at stake.
