Ten league titles in the Bolton Combination between 1920 and 1965 did not come easily, and none of them travelled far from home. The club was formed in 1916 by miners from six collieries across the Atherton Urban District.
Promotion through non-league football has come in bursts rather than a steady climb. The Colls won the North West Counties League Division One twice, in 2010–11 and again in 2014–15, then took the Premier Division in 2016–17 and the Northern Premier League's Division One West title in 2018–19.
Across town, Atherton Laburnum Rovers supply the fixture that still carries weight locally. It is known as the Flatcap Derby.
Few players who wore the shirt went on to be recognised names elsewhere; Jack Lenehan moved on to Bury after his time at the club.
The ground has carried a sponsor's name for some years now, known as The Skuna Stadium, though it was built as Alder House and holds 2,500 people in Atherton, a Greater Manchester town that still shapes the club fielding its name.
