Baltika

Kaliningrad is a city on the Baltic coast, cut off from the rest of Russia by Lithuania and Poland, and its football club has never played anywhere else. Baltika took its present name in 1958, four years after it was founded as Pishchevik on 23 August 1954.

The club spent one season in the top flight in the 1990s and finished 7th in 1996. Promotion had come the year before, as champions of the First League in 1995. What followed was a long descent: titles in the Second Division in 2002 and 2005.

The stadium changed the arithmetic. Built between 2015 and 2018 on Oktyabrsky Island for the World Cup, it holds 35 016 — a capacity fixed by a tournament rather than by anything the club had drawn before. It was renamed Rostec Arena on 6 August 2023, at which point Baltika were in the second tier and filling a ground designed for group-stage football between other people's national teams.

They finished second in the First League in 2022/23 and then reached the Russian Cup final, losing 1:2 to Zenit on 2 June 2024 — the closest the club has come to a national trophy. Promotion followed the next season: champions of the First League in 2024/25, 30 years after the first title of the same name.

Baltika are back in the Premier League, playing in white and blue, and the task is the one the club failed at in 1996 and 1997 — turning a single season up into a stay.
