Akron

The night that told Tolyatti what its football club could be came in the Cup, in the regions' path of the 2022/23 season, when Akron knocked out Spartak, then Lokomotiv, then Dinamo — the three Moscow clubs, one after another. The final ended against Krasnodar on penalties, 4:2.

The 2019/20 season brought first place in the Urals-Volga zone of the third division. By 2023/24 Akron were third in the First League, and the promotion play-off against Ural finished 3:2 across the two legs. Tolyatti had a top-flight club for the first time.

That created a problem the club still has not solved on its own terms. Home is the Kristall stadium in Zhigulyovsk, a small town up the Volga — a ground opened in 1957, refitted in 2015, artificial surface, room for just over 3,000. The Russian Premier League requires 10,000. So for league matches Akron travel to Samara and rent the Solidarnost Samara Arena, a World Cup ground built for a different scale of occasion entirely.

The red-and-black shirts and the D114 stand carry most of what passes for tradition here; there is not yet a nickname that anyone agrees on. The staying up has been the harder work. In 2025/26 the club again went through the play-offs, this time past Rotor, 2:1 on aggregate, to keep its place.

Kristall holds 3,010. The arena Akron rent in Samara holds 45,000.
