In 2022 SpVgg Bayreuth won the Regionalliga Bayern and went up to the 3. Liga. The stay was short: in 2023 the team went back down to the Regionalliga.

The regional titles are the steadier thread. The club has won the Bayernliga eight times, first in 1959 and most recently in 2014, and added the Landesliga Bayern-Nord in 1998 and 2001.

It reached the DFB-Pokal quarter-finals in 1976–77 and again in 1979–80.

Armin Veh played for the club from 1987 to 1990. He later became a Bundesliga coach. Josef Zinnbauer wore the shirt in the early 1990s.

The club was formed in 1921, when the football section broke away from the gymnastics club TuSpo Bayreuth. The nickname, Die Altstädter, translates as "the Oldtowners". The other side in town is 1. FC Bayreuth, and matches between the two are called the Stadtderby, or Bayreuther Derby.

Home games are played in black and yellow at the Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadion, which holds 21,500.
