Belgium's youth sides train and play out of the Proximus Basecamp in Tubize, a complex built as the central hub for every national team the Royal Belgian Football Association fields. It has no fixed capacity for spectators, because it was never built with a crowd in mind — the pitches exist for preparation, not matchday.

Its own honours list is thin by comparison. The one title on record dates from 1977, when Belgium won the UEFA European Under-18 Championship on home soil. Since that switch, Belgium have reached the finals four times — in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2011 — and gone out at the group stage on each occasion.

What the age group has produced instead is a production line. Kevin De Bruyne, Toby Alderweireld and Eden Hazard all passed through it within the same two seasons, 2007 to 2009, eleven caps apiece. Thorgan Hazard followed a little later, capped twenty-three times between 2010 and 2012.

Belgium's fixture against the Netherlands carries its own name, the Low Countries derby.
