Bonaire

The tournament itself, shared with Aruba and Suriname, is the closest thing Bonaire has to a stage that fits its size — a trophy won in 2011, when they beat Aruba on penalties after a 2–2 draw, sits alongside third place in 2013.

The team exists in a category of its own. It represents a special municipality of the Netherlands rather than a country, and FIFA rejected its membership application in September 2019; an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport went nowhere, so a World Cup qualifying campaign is not something Bonaire can enter. CONCACAF took the federation in as an associate member in April 2013 and upgraded it to full membership the following year, which is how a squad drawn largely from amateurs with day jobs on the island ended up in League C of the CONCACAF Nations League, without promotion in three attempts.

Before any of that, the players who once turned out for Bonaire did so under the Netherlands Antilles badge; the split came with that federation's dissolution in October 2010, and Bonaire marked its own arrival with a 4–2 loss to Suriname in the ABCS Tournament that same month. Jort van der Sande, who spent his childhood years on the island before building a career in the Dutch Eerste Divisie with clubs including FC Den Bosch and ADO Den Haag, is generally reckoned the team's first full-time professional — everyone since has mostly combined the shirt with work or the local leagues.
