Estadio Pedro Marrero sits in Havana and holds 30,000 people. The Football Association of Cuba, which runs the side, was formed in 1924, and the team took the field for the first time six years later at the Central American and Caribbean Games, beating Jamaica 3–1 in Havana.

The team is known as Los Leones del Caribe, and the furthest it has ever gone came in 1938, in France. Cuba reached the World Cup by walkover after Mexico withdrew, then beat Romania 2–1 in a replay following a 3–3 draw, becoming the first Caribbean side to reach a World Cup knockout round. Juan Tuñas scored in that tournament; Héctor Socorro put three past Romania in the group stage. The run ended in the quarter-finals, an 8–0 defeat to Sweden.

The Gold Cup has never yielded a trophy, only quarter-final exits in 2003, 2013 and 2015, and the one major honour of the modern era arrived in 2012, when Cuba won the Caribbean Cup. Yénier Márquez holds the appearance record with 126 caps, while Lester Moré is the all-time leading scorer with 30 goals.
