BSG Chemie Leipzig

BSG Chemie Leipzig play in the Regionalliga Nordost, the fourth tier of German football, in a ground built for 4,999: the Alfred-Kunze-Stadion. The club that stands there today was refounded by supporters on 16 July 1997. That club became FC Grün-Weiß Leipzig in May 1990, merged with SV Chemie Böhlen that August to form FC Sachsen Leipzig, and folded in 2011. The supporters' club was the one that kept the name and the green and white.

It was formed in August 1950 from the sports section of ZSG Industrie Leipzig and won the DDR-Oberliga in 1950–51. In September 1954 it was dissolved and its resources went to SC Lokomotive Leipzig. When SC Lokomotive was disbanded in 1963, Chemie was re-established, and it won the Oberliga again in 1963–64. In 1965–66 it beat 1. FC Lok Stendal 1–0 in the FDGB-Pokal final, the East German cup. That put it into the 1966–67 European Cup Winners' Cup, where it knocked out Legia Warsaw and went out in the second round to Royal Standard Liège.

In those years the club drew crowds to the Zentralstadion, which held between 100,000 and 120,000, and sometimes played at the Georg-Schwarz-Sportpark. The Leipziger Stadtderby against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig was the city's fiercest fixture. The rivalry was set by the 1954 transfer of Chemie's resources to SC Lokomotive.
