FC Magdeburg

The football side of Magdeburg's big multi-sport club was cut loose to stand on its own on 21 December 1965, and the new outfit inherited both a squad and a cup — SC Aufbau Magdeburg had already taken the FDGB-Pokal in 1964 and 1965. Behind that lay two decades of renamings that ran through the city's engineering works: Krupp-Gruson, Stahl, Motor Mitte. What emerged was known simply as Der Club.

Nine years later came the afternoon that still anchors the place. Magdeburg beat Milan in Rotterdam to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1974. The same season brought the DDR-Oberliga title, and in the summer Jürgen Sparwasser scored the goal that beat West Germany at the World Cup.

Joachim Streich played through all of it and holds the club records for both appearances and goals; he came back later to manage. Streich is the name that ties the 1970s side to everything after.

The seven cup wins ran on into the 1980s. Since reunification the DFB-Pokal has stayed out of reach — two semi-finals, in 2001 and 2002, and no further.

Dresden away is the fixture the city marks first, the Elbclásico, with Halle and the Saxony-Anhalt derby behind it. The ground, the Avnet Arena, has carried three names in its time.
