The club formed on 2 June 1900, and took its present name in 1931 after a run of mergers and renamings earlier in the century. It was one of the sixteen founding members of the Bundesliga in 1963. What followed was less settled: relegation in 2006, promotion back in 2010, relegation again in 2012, and in 2018 a drop into the third tier for the first time in the club's history. Promotion out of it came in 2022, and the team currently sits sixth in the second division.
Beyond the league table, Kaiserslautern has lifted the DFB-Pokal twice, in 1990 and 1996. The fixture against 1. FSV Mainz 05 carries the weight of a Rhineland-Palatinate derby, and matches with Saarbrücken and Elversberg draw on the same regional rivalry.
Home games are played in a city that has followed the club through top flight, second tier and third tier alike.
