Eintracht Braunschweig

The Lions take their nickname from the red lion on Braunschweig's coat of arms, and the blue-and-yellow strip traces back to the flag of the old Duchy of Brunswick. Herbert Burdenski, who played through the late 1940s and into the 1950s, remains the club's all-time leading scorer; two decades later, Paul Breitner, fresh off West Germany's 1974 World Cup win, spent a season in the same colours.

In 1973 Eintracht became the first Bundesliga club to carry a sponsor's name on its shirt, when Jägermeister's logo appeared on the jersey.

Relegation from the Bundesliga came in 1985, after 22 straight seasons in the top flight, and the drop that followed two years later was unusual enough to stand alone in the record books: Braunschweig went down with a positive goal difference. The club found its way back only once Torsten Liberknecht took charge in 2008, steering it through the third tier and the 2. Bundesliga to a Bundesliga return in 2013 — though that stay lasted a single season, and further relegations followed.

The club traces back to 15 December 1895, when it was founded as FuCC Eintracht, a football and cricket club, years before Germany's occupying authorities forced a merger into TSV Braunschweig and the Eintracht name was restored in 1949.
