Cruz Alta is a farming town in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, and organised football had already taken root there before the club that now carries the city's name existed. Sport Club Arranca had been playing since 1914 when Cruz Alta Futebol Clube was formed in 1941, the same year another local side, Grêmio Riograndense, was also set up in the town.
Cruz Alta plays in the Terceira Divisão Gaúcha, the third tier of the Rio Grande do Sul state championship, a level far removed from the clubs that dominate the state's headlines. In 2019 the club brought in a new coach midway through that season to take the squad through its remaining fixtures in the competition, the kind of change common at a stage of football where a side's fortunes can turn on a single appointment.
It remains one of Cruz Alta's football institutions, still turning out in the lower reaches of the state championship rather than the divisions that draw the crowds.
