Malabo sits on Bioko island, a stretch of volcanic coast separated from the Río Muni mainland that makes up the rest of Equatorial Guinea, and the national side is one of the few things that ties the two halves of the country together. The Estadio de Malabo, holding 15,250, has been the stage for that: red shirts, a name that changed from Basilé Nacional to Nzalang Nacional in 2013, and a federation, FEGUIFUT, that has run the game since 1975, eleven years before it joined FIFA and CAF.

The team's one real run at continental football came in 2015, when it reached the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations as hosts, losing to Ghana before falling to DR Congo on penalties in the third-place match. It had already reached the quarter-finals in 2012, sharing hosting duties with Gabon, and did so again in 2021. Regionally, the CEMAC Cup went to Malabo in 2006, Cameroon beaten on penalties in the final; three years later the side finished runners-up in the same competition.

None of it has translated into a World Cup appearance, and the squad's reliance on naturalised players — drawn over the years from Brazil, Nigeria and Spain — has followed the team into eligibility disputes more than once. Emilio Nsue, the side's leading scorer with 23 goals, was ruled ineligible for his entire international career by FIFA in 2024, a decision that cost the federation two 2026 World Cup qualifying results and left Nsue serving a six-month ban.

Gabon and Cameroon remain the fixtures that matter most, sharing both a region and, in Cameroon's case, the CEMAC Cup final that gave Malabo its only regional title.
