Essingen

The Schönbrunnenstadion holds 4,000 people, and sponsorship has given it a second name, Carento-Arena.

The football side is younger than the name on the crest suggests. SV Essingen was founded on 8 June 1945, and on 22 January 1949 it merged with the gymnastics club TV Essingen, which dated from 18 June 1893. The club counts from 1893, so the date belongs to the gymnasts.

The results came late. Promotion to the Landesliga arrived in 2008. Essingen won the Landesliga Württemberg in 2011 and again in 2014, so the title was won twice within four seasons. In 2023 they won the Verbandsliga Württemberg, and that title took them into the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg.

The neighbours shape the calendar. 1. FC Normannia Gmünd and VfR Aalen are the local rivals, and games against either are grouped under the name Ostalb-Derby.

Uwe Bialon is the name the club can point to when it talks about the top flight, since he made a Bundesliga appearance for VfB Stuttgart. Patrick Funk came through the Stuttgart youth system and played for Germany at under-21 level.
