Memmingen

The club has lately been a place where careers start and restart. David Günes came through the youth system and left for SpVgg Greuther Fürth II in 2024. Dominik Stroh-Engel spent two seasons at Memmingen from 2022 to 2024, after years in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. Nicolas Helmbrecht, a local player, came back to the club.

The high point of the modern era came in 1996–97, when Memmingen finished second in the Bayernliga. That league was then the third tier of German football, and it was where the club spent much of the 1980s and 1990s. The tiers were later reorganised, and when Memmingen won the Bayernliga again in 2009–10 it was only the fifth level. The two titles were won in the same league but at very different heights. Seven years earlier, in 2003, the club had won the Landesliga Bayern-Süd, having also won it in 1970. Memmingen has never played in the 2. Bundesliga.

The older honours are regional. The Schwaben Cup came in 1958, 1967 and 1976. In 2020 the club reached the semi-finals of the Bavarian cup, the BFV Toto-Pokal. Matches against FV Illertissen or FC Kempten are billed as the Allgäu Derby, and they are played in front of the 5,100 seats of the Memminger Arena.

Football in the town began as a side activity. In 1907 a few players formed the football department of the Memminger Turnverein 1859, a gymnastics society. They stayed under its roof until 1924, when they became an independent club.
