FC Fredericia

Fredericia is a garrison and port town on the Jutland coast, the kind of place where two rival sides of the same city spent decades playing against each other before anyone thought to put them on the same team. That changed on 3 January 1991, when Fredericia fF and Fredericia KFUM merged under pressure from local sponsors and the municipality, who wanted one professional outfit rather than two competing for the same crowd. FC Fredericia took the field as a single club from the start of that year, won its very first Danmarksserien group in 1991, and by 2003 had settled into its current form after Fredericia fF broke away and left FC Fredericia as the professional wing of KFUM alone.

The club has gone the best part of thirty-five years without lifting a major honour. A Fionia Bank Cup win in 2005, on goal difference ahead of Kolding and Vejle, remains the closest thing to silverware beyond that first regional title. Two semi-final runs in the Danish Cup, in 2018 and again in 2024, hint at what the club can do without quite getting there — in 2018 it was Oliver Fredstedt, since gone into recruitment work at the club, who scored the own goal that ended the run.

What did arrive, finally, was promotion: second place in the 2024/25 1st Division sent FC Fredericia into the Superliga for the first time in its history, with Patrik Egelund among those who signed on for it by extending his contract before the season ended. The club plays in red and black at Monjasa Park, rebuilt and reopened in April 2021 with room for 6,000, and the fixture against Vejle Boldklub still carries the weight of a local derby.

A first Superliga campaign now sits ahead of a club that has never won the Danish Cup and has nothing else in the cabinet to fall back on.
