Minsk carries enough football clubs to confuse a newcomer, and for decades the capital's identity belonged to the bigger crests — Dinamo, later BATE. FC Minsk grew up in the shadow of that, tracing its roots to 19 June 1954, when the Committee for Physical Culture and Sport set up a Football School of Youth at the Institute of Physical Culture. The school became "Smena" in the Soviet years and carried that name into independent Belarus's championships, but the club known today as Minsk only took shape in 2006, when a new professional side was built on Smena's foundation, won the First League at the first attempt and went straight up to the top flight. The old Smena side carried on underneath it as a farm club, renamed Minsk-2 in 2007.

Home matches are played at the club's own ground on Mayakovskogo Street, a modest 3,050-seat venue still known to older fans by its Soviet name, Kamvolshchik. There was never room here for the scale of the capital's bigger clubs, and the club has made do with it through its best years.

Those years centred on one cup run. Minsk reached the Belarusian Cup final in 2011/12 and lost, then went back the following season and won it, Vadim Skripchenko managing the side to the trophy and, on the back of it, into the group stage of the Europa League — still the club's most significant continental campaign. A third-place league finish in 2010 remains its best in the championship proper. Through much of that period the last line of defence belonged to Alexander Gutor, captain for years and named Belarus's footballer of the year in 2011, the closest thing the club has had to a defining figure.

The cup and the European run now sit a decade back. Minsk has settled into the life of a top-flight club without the resources to trouble the capital's larger names again, its ground on Mayakovskogo Street still the smallest reminder of how far short of them it plays.
