About

The Premier League serves as the premier professional football competition in Belarus, structured under the Belarusian Football Federation (ABFF). Established in 1992, the tournament replaced the Belarusian SSR Championship and adopted a unique Spring-Autumn calendar in 1995, running from March to November. The current season features 16 clubs competing in a double round-robin format, resulting in 30 matchdays per year. The top two finishers secure promotion to the European stage, while the bottom two teams face automatic relegation to the First League. The 14th-placed side enters a two-legged playoff against the third-place team from the lower division. BATE Borisov holds the record for success, claiming 15 titles, including a streak of 13 consecutive championships between 2006 and 2018. Dinamo Minsk follows as the second most successful club with nine titles. In the 2025 campaign, Maxline Vitebsk won their first title in their debut season in the top flight, finishing ahead of Dinamo Minsk, who had won in 2024. The league operates with a salary cap of $5,800 per month, introduced in 2021 to manage financial outflows. Since 2022, the competition has been isolated from UEFA competitions due to sanctions, severing its primary financial link to Europe. This period marked the only time a European top-flight league continued playing during the 2020 pandemic. The structure is distinct for its state-dominated ownership model, with major clubs like BATE Borisov and Dinamo Minsk heavily subsidized by state enterprises or government bodies. The league currently carries the sponsored name "Betera — Championship of the Republic of Belarus among teams of the Premier League," a title adopted in 2025 following previous sponsorship from Alfa-Bank and Belarusbank.
