The Belarusian First League is the second tier of professional football in the country. It sits directly below the Premier League and above the Second League. The competition was established in 1992 by the Belarusian Football Federation following the dissolution of the Soviet football system. Teams compete in a double round-robin format, usually involving between 16 and 18 clubs. Success in this division leads to direct promotion to the top flight for the leading two sides. Conversely, the two lowest-placed teams face relegation to the third tier.
A defining characteristic of the First League is its roster composition. Official reserve teams from top-tier clubs are excluded from participation. This rule distinguishes it from the Second League, which permits these squads. Instead, the First League features youth teams or independent clubs. For instance, current participants include Arsenal II, BGU Minsk, and Dnepr Mogilev II. These sides compete alongside other regional and youth outfits such as DYuSSh-3 Pinsk and Energosbyt-BSATU Smorgon.
Belshina Bobruisk holds the record for the most league titles won by a single club. They have secured the championship four times. The most recent winner is FC Baranavichy, who claimed the title for the 2025 season. This victory secures their place in the Premier League for the subsequent year. The competition operates without a major commercial sponsor attached to its official name. This contrasts with the financial structure of the top division, which typically carries significant sponsorship. The league serves as a crucial bridge for clubs aiming to reach the highest level of Belarusian football.
