The Stade d'Angondjé sits in Libreville with room for 40,000, built as the Stade de l'Amitié sino-gabonaise and handed to the national team as the ground for Les Panthères. Gabon have used it as the stage for their two best runs in the Africa Cup of Nations, both ending at the quarter-final stage, in 1996 and again in 2012.
The Gabonese Football Federation dates its formation to 1962, though the national side had already taken the field for the first time two years earlier, in April 1960. What the federation has never managed is a place at the FIFA World Cup finals, and the Africa Cup of Nations remains the ceiling: two quarter-finals, sixteen years apart, and nothing beyond them.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang carries the side's scoring record, 40 goals in 86 caps. Bruno Ecuele Manga has worn the shirt more often than anyone, 118 caps. The 2012 quarter-final came under Gernot Rohr, who took charge of a squad that included Daniel Cousin up front; the 1996 run was managed by Alain Da Costa.
Across the border, Equatorial Guinea supply the rivalry that matters most to Gabonese supporters. The gap in the record book is plain enough: two quarter-finals stand as the high-water mark, and the World Cup has never once been reached.
