Christian Wörns took this group to Wales in 2026 and brought it back with a runner-up medal, beaten by Spain in the final of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Spain is the opponent this age group keeps meeting when it matters. In 2025 the two played a semi-final that went to extra time and finished 6-5 to Spain, a result that left the Germans a year to think about it.

Germany has won the tournament three times. The 1981 side beat Poland 1-0. In 2008 it beat Italy 3-1. In 2014 Portugal lost 1-0 in the final, and Julian Brandt was a key member of that squad. Brandt was one of several players who passed through the age group on the way to the senior team, alongside Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Lukas Podolski, Toni Kroos and Leroy Sané.

The line back runs to 1954, when West Germany hosted the international youth tournament that preceded the European championship and lost the final to Spain. After reunification in 1990, the youth teams of East Germany were absorbed into the German Football Association (DFB). East Germany's under-18 side had won the European title in 1986, a trophy that does not count in the German tally.

The squad has no ground to call its own. Friendlies and qualifiers are played wherever the fixture list sends them, and the players are based at the DFB-Campus in Frankfurt am Main, the base for every German national team.
