In 1952 and again in 1954, Spain won the European youth title without winning the deciding match outright. The tournament was then still an under-18 event, and both times the trophy went to Spain on goal average, first ahead of Belgium and then ahead of West Germany.

The side that now plays as Spain U19, known in the Spanish press as La Rojita, took its present form in 2001. Its first official match was played on 3 October that year in Monzón and finished 2–0 against Switzerland. The team has no permanent stadium. It trains and is run from the Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas, outside Madrid, and takes friendlies and tournament games to grounds such as Pinatar Arena.

The first title of the under-19 era came in 2002, a 1–0 win over Germany in the final. Fernando Torres was the tournament's top scorer that summer. Juan Mata later scored 12 goals in the competition, still the most by anyone, and the age group has since produced Álvaro Morata, Marco Asensio and Lamine Yamal.

Two coaches stand out. Luis de la Fuente won the title in 2015, beating Russia 2–0, and won it again in 2024 against France, the opponent Spain most often meets in the late rounds. Santi Denia won it in between, in 2019, with a 2–0 win over Portugal.

The most recent title, in 2026, came against Germany again. Hugo López and Mario Rivas scored the goals in a 2–0 win. It made ten under-19 titles, more than any other nation.
