Giana Erminio

The mother of a 19-year-old lieutenant killed on Monte Zugna in 1916 gave her war pension to a football club so it could buy a training ground — the club took his name in return. Erminio Giana had grown up in Gorgonzola, and in 1932 the side then known as Unione Sportiva Argentia, founded in 1909 under the old Latin name for the town, became G.S. Erminio Giana. It has kept some form of it through further changes, including a spell as E.N.A.L. Gorgonzola in 1944, before settling as AS Giana Erminio.

For most of its life the club sat outside professional football altogether. That changed between 2012 and 2014, when Cesare Albè took the team from Eccellenza Lombardia to a Serie D title in successive seasons, opening the door to Lega Pro for the first time. It has not been a straight climb since: relegation from Serie C came in 2020 over administrative trouble, and again in 2022, each time followed by a Serie D championship that pushed them straight back up, the most recent in 2022–23.

Daniele Pinto has worn the captain's armband through much of that Serie C spell, while the club has more often sent players onward than developed them from its own academy — Luca Mazzitelli, Andrea Barberis and Matteo Scozzarella all passed through Gorgonzola before reaching Monza and then Serie A.
