Gosport Borough

Wembley in 2014 was supposed to be Gosport Borough's stage as much as Cambridge United's, and for a while it looked that way, before the club from a Hampshire naval town went down 4-0 in the FA Trophy final. The run there had turned on a single afternoon in the semi-final, when Tim Sills scored all three goals in the tie.

The club came together in 1944, formed as Gosport Borough Athletic Club to give the town organised sport again before the war had even finished. It plays at The AEI Stadium, known locally as Privett Park, in red and white that have occasionally given way to yellow and blue away from home.

Domestic silverware has come in short, defined bursts rather than a steady flow: the Hampshire League title in 1945-46, then the same league retained across 1976-77 and 1977-78, and the Wessex League won in 2006-07. The Hampshire Senior Cup has gone to Gosport twice, against Farnborough Town in 1987-88 and against Sholing by three goals to nil in 2014-15, either side of a Wessex League Cup won in 1992-93.

Fixtures against Havant & Waterlooville carry their own name, the "Battle of Hampshire", and matches with Sholing and Fareham Town have the same local edge that needs no explaining to anyone from the town.

No name at Privett Park carries more weight than Justin Bennett's. He finished as the club's all-time record goalscorer with 263 goals and was central to the promotions won through the play-offs in 2012 and 2013.
