Hellas Kagran

Nikon El Maestro came back to Kagran in 2016, on the same pitch where he had joined the youth setup two years earlier to coach the under-11s and under-16s. Nobody signs a former professional midfielder to play for a club at this level for the money; it says more about what Hellas Kagran is to the people who pass through it than any line in a history book.

The club took its name from the Greek families who founded it in the 22nd district of Vienna in June 1926, and it kept coming back to that identity even when its sponsors changed it beyond recognition. Through the 1970s, 80s and 90s it played as FC Montagebau, Ekos Möbel Kagran, FC Röder Kagran and half a dozen other names tied to whoever was paying the bills, before the members settled the matter for good in 2004 and returned to FC Hellas-Kagran.

The high point on the pitch came earlier than any of that. In 1966 Hellas won the Wiener Liga, then the third tier, and went up to the Regionalliga Ost — the only time the club has reached that level. Everything since has been built lower down the pyramid: titles in the Unterliga B, the Oberliga B, the 2. Landesliga, most recently in 2023. The nearest the club came to the national stage was the 2011 Wiener Toto-Cup, won 2:0 against Post SV, which earned a first-round tie in the Austrian Cup against Bundesliga side Innsbruck. Hellas lost 4:0, but over 1,400 people turned out to watch, more than the Sport-Arena in Kagran ever holds for a league game.

A women's team carried the club into the Austrian Frauen-Bundesliga between 1999 and 2004, a spell no other Kagran side has matched at national level. These days the men's team sits in the lower reaches of Viennese football, still measuring itself against neighbours like SR Donaufeld and SV Gerasdorf/Stammersdorf, with staying in the 2. Landesliga the job in front of it.
