The Swifts took their name in 1945, when the club reformed after the war. It had first been founded in 1880 as plain Heybridge Football Club. The Essex Junior Cup followed in 1931–32.
The club won the Essex Senior League three seasons in a row, from 1981–82 to 1983–84, and took the Isthmian League Cup in the first of those seasons. It won the Isthmian League Division Two North in 1989–90, and the East Anglian Cup in 1993–94 and 1994–95.
Heybridge won on penalties.
Simon Royce left for Southend United for £35,000, which remains the highest fee the club has received. Arthur "Stumpy" Moss stayed. Between 1948 and 1960 he scored 193 goals for the club.
