«The Town»
Four men from Witham — H. Green, W. Rust, F. Bridge and E. Turner — put a team together in 1876, which earned it the name "The Red Herrings". The First World War broke that up; players went into the Essex Regiment and the club stood down. It came back in 1919, took the name Witham Town F.C. in 1921, then folded again in 1938 as support drained away to Crittall's Athletic, the works team that grew into Braintree Town. Sid Rice put it back together in 1948.
Witham were there at the very start of the Essex Senior League, winning the first title in 1971–72. The 1985–86 season brought a league and cup double, and the championship came round once more in 2011–12.
Spa Road has been home since 1975, when the club left The Park. Heybridge Swifts remain the derby that matters most.
