HNK Rijeka

Rijeka's place on the map shifted more than once across the twentieth century, and the football club carried a different name through each version of the city. It began as the football section of a multi-sport club, Olimpia, active from 25 November 1906. When the port went by its Italian name, Fiume, the side spent the 1928/29 season in Italy's Serie A as Fiumana. The club settled into NK Rijeka in 1954, then took its current name, HNK Rijeka, in 1995.

The clearest measure of where the club stands came decades apart. In 2016/17, Rijeka won its first Croatian league title, breaking Dinamo Zagreb's hold on the championship, and added the Croatian Cup the same season. A second title took until 2024/25, again paired with the Cup, this one won against Slaven Belupo.

One result from further back still gets told on its own: in the 1984 UEFA Cup, Rijeka beat Real Madrid 3-1, Damir Desnica among the scorers.

Matches against Hajduk Split run the length of the Adriatic coast and are known as the Jadranski derbi; inside the city, the older fixture is against Orijent. Andrej Kramarić came through the club before his move to Leicester City, sold for a fee that stood as a club record.

Home games are played at Rujevica, officially Stadion HNK Rijeka, which holds 8,279.
