Inhulets

Nika Sichinava was named the best player in the Ukrainian First League in the 2019/20 season, and he did it in the shirt of a club from a village that had been playing amateur football six years earlier. That season ended with bronze — the second time in three years that Inhulets finished a campaign among the medals of whatever division they happened to be in.

The club was put together in 2013 in Petrove, a settlement in the Kirovohrad region, and spent its first full year winning what was in front of it: the amateur cup and the regional championship, both in 2014. The following summer a stadium opened, and by 2015/16 the team had taken third place in the Second League.

Then came the run that made them known outside the region. In 2018/19, still a second-division side, Inhulets went through the Ukrainian Cup to the final — no club from that level had ever reached one. They lost it, but the route mattered more than the result, and it is the line that still comes first when the club is described.

The First League title arrived in 2023/24, five years after the cup run and four years after the bronze. It was the promotion the club had been circling since the middle of the last decade.

The ground itself is the smallest part of the story and the most specific. Inhulets Stadium holds 1,869 — fewer seats than most Ukrainian top-flight clubs sell in a single stand — in a settlement that would not otherwise appear on a football map. The yellow and red are visible from anywhere in it.
