Karlsruher SC U19

Karlsruher SC's under-19 side reached a final it had chased twice before and lost twice before, this time to Werder Bremen in the DFB-Pokal der Junioren. It was the third such final in the club's history, after defeats to VfL Bochum in 1989 and Freiburg in 2006. What the run does show is a production line that keeps delivering players even when the silverware does not follow: Oliver Kahn and Mehmet Scholl both came up through Karlsruhe before their careers took them elsewhere, and Hakan Çalhanoğlu's early career is tied to the same academy.

The senior club that this youth side feeds carries a different kind of history. Founded in 1894 as Karlsruher FC Phönix, it took its present name and shape in 1952 after merging with Karlsruher FV, and its best years on the pitch belong to the mid-1950s, when it won the DFB-Pokal in successive seasons. A UEFA Intertoto Cup followed in 1996, by which point the club had already picked up a nickname it still carries in some quarters, "Eurofighter," after a 7–0 demolition of Valencia in the UEFA Cup in 1993 — a result well beyond anything the youth side has managed in its own European-adjacent ambitions.

Everything both teams play for locally runs through one fixture. Stuttgart sits an hour up the road, and the meetings between the two clubs are billed as the Baden-Württemberg derby, a fixture that carries weight down through the age groups regardless of which division either side occupies at the time.
