Eswatini is the fixture Lesotho circles on the calendar, where the two have met often enough to matter to each other.

The nickname means Crocodiles in Sesotho, and it belongs to a team. Twice Lesotho reached the final of the COSAFA Cup, in 2000 and again in 2023, and lost both; a third-place finish in 2018 sits alongside those.

Since 2021 the team has not been able to play at home at all. FIFA condemned the state of Setsoto Stadium in Maseru, and Lesotho has had to stage its home fixtures in South Africa instead, waiting on plans to rebuild the ground and lift its capacity to 25,000 from the current 13,900. The Lesotho Football Association itself dates back to 1932, decades before the national side ever kicked a ball internationally in 1970, and it took until the following decade for the country to be recognised by CAF and FIFA in turn.

No player is tied to that history more than Jane Thabantso, who has pulled on the shirt 101 times and scored 15 goals along the way, both national records. It is Thabantso's name that comes up first whenever the conversation turns to who Lesotho has produced rather than what it has won.
