Lokomotive Leipzig

The three German championships, in 1903, 1906 and 1913, were won under a different name. The side that took them was VfB Leipzig. VfB added the DFB-Pokal in 1937.

From 1966 to 1990 the club played as 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig, and it did its winning in the GDR. It took the FDGB-Pokal, the East German cup, five times, first in 1957 and last in 1986 and 1987. It also won the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1966.

The end of East German football left VfB Leipzig holding that inheritance. VfB went bankrupt, and in 2003 a new club was set up in its place under the old Lokomotive name. The club now plays in the Regionalliga Nordost, and it has kept the blue and yellow.

Local rivalries mark the city's football. Games against BSG Chemie Leipzig are known as the "Hass-Derby", a derby with no love lost, and the tension there runs through politics as much as sport.

The history goes back to 11 November 1893, when SC Sportbrüder Leipzig was founded.
