The club began in 1903 as Sportovní kroužek Kladno, turning into Sportovní klub Kladno two years later, and through the Communist decades it barely kept a name for long: ZK Ocelárny Kladno, then TJ Poldi Kladno, then SK Poldi Kladno. SK Kladno returned to the club's books in 1996.

Jan Suchopárek, who played for the Czech Republic at Euro 96, returned to Kladno in 2003. Since 2020 the reserve team has played out of Unhošť under an arrangement with TJ Unhošť, while the first team stayed in Kladno.

František Kloz topped the league's scoring charts in 1930 and 1937 before he was killed in 1945, having scored more than 590 goals in a Kladno shirt.
