Baník Ostrava

The football club took its name from that work — Baník means the mine — and the nickname stuck in two languages: Baníček at home, the Miners everywhere else. Twenty men signed the founding agreement in a restaurant called U Dubu on 8 September 1922, under a different name entirely, SK Slezská Ostrava.

The blue and white shirts did their best work in the late 1970s and early 1980s, when Baník won the Czechoslovak championship three times in six seasons — 1975/76, then back-to-back in 1979/80 and 1980/81. The one Czech league title arrived in 2003/04, and that pairing remains the club's most recent silverware.

Before all that came the last of the Czechoslovak cups, in 1991, and it was the kind of final that gets retold rather than looked up: Spartak Trnava were out of sight by half-time in the wrong direction, beaten 6–1.

The move away from Bazaly in 2015 was the sharper break. Baník now play at the Municipal Stadium in Ostrava-Vítkovice, a ground first opened in 1938 and rebuilt between 2012 and 2015, with 15,123 seats and no terracing left anywhere in it.

What the club has not managed is a second act to the 2004–05 pair. More than two decades on, the league title and the cup that followed it still stand as the last things Baník won.
